AGWS (Agora Groupware Web Server) is a web based groupware application which supports effective teamwork over the Internet within projects, distributed classrooms, groups or disperse enterprises by supporting the communication and collaboration within a team.

The AGWS server is accessed by standard web access or e-mail and supports the creation of project, team or e-learning web spaces which are accessible at any time and from any place where Internet access exists. The collaboration space will be the virtual meeting place of a team and will allow an easy communication between the members. AGWS "collaboration spaces" are also "shared spaces" or simply "spaces". Collaboration spaces can include several functions, such as:

  • Private, shared or fully public document repositories.
  • Member, group, forum, voting and mailing list management system.
  • Virtual rooms with application sharing, chat, VoIP conferencing, etc.
  • Meeting, activity or calendar management system.
  • Course and eLearning management system

To assure secure use of the collaboration space, users are authenticated before access is allowed. Access is made secure by using HTTPS for communication over the Internet.

The usability was a prime concern in the design of the service. The user communicates with the AGWS server either by email or by standard Web access, depending on the preferences of the user and on the performance of the different communication means. AGWS provides also linkage with the user mailboxes, agendas, LAPTOPS, etc., such that synchronisation between both can be easily achieved. AGWS can be also used as a framework for supporting and managing Isabel sessions.

Each AGWS server can host many (hundreds of) independent teams and projects, where each team will have it's own collaboration space. Each collaboration space will be completely independent from the others. Therefore, the AGWS can be used in a variety of situations. For example, an AGWS server can be an enterprise server supporting the departments, groups or projects of the enterprise. The AGWS can also be used by an ASP (Application Service Provider) to deliver collaboration spaces to third parts.
